Can You Get a Breast Lift without Implants?

Posted on by Dr. Ashley Chandler to Breast Lift, Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is highly personalized, and you want procedures tailored for you. Thanks to the myriad of procedures available, you can achieve the look you want. In many cases, you can avoid surgeries, such as getting implants, if you so desire. For example, did you know that a doctor does not have to use implants to give you a breast lift?

We at Charlotte Plastic Surgery want to educate our patients about procedures and how these surgeries can transform lives. To help you understand whether you want only a breast lift or you may want this option with implants, we’ve created this guide on the two options.

Breast Lift Surgery

Breast lift surgery Charlotte NC, also called mastopexy, restores the youthful appearance of firm, properly placed breasts. This procedure can accompany breast augmentation or be a standalone surgery. Whether you opt for only breast lift or add implants to the procedure depends on the concerns you have.

What Breast Lift Addresses

Like many people, you may have loved the appearance of the breasts you had in your youth. While young, breasts typically have an aesthetically pleasing firmness and shape.

Time and life changes will impact the appearance of your breasts. Some of the most common causes of breast changes include hormonal changes, pregnancy, and aging. These factors contribute to sagging breasts that lose their shape.

A breast lift corrects these issues by surgically moving the breast and nipple into a higher position that looks more youthful.

What Breast Lift Surgery Cannot Do?

While breast lift surgery offers a way to improve the figure, it has limitations. First, if you feel dissatisfied with the size or volume of your breasts, a breast lift alone will not help. You may need augmentation with a breast lift procedure to fill out your chest. Do your research about breast lift vs breast augmentation to help you decide.

Another limitation of this surgery is its ability to fill the top part of your breasts. If you feel that the top of your breasts feels empty, you may want to talk to your doctor about the different types of breast implants, which create a fuller look to the entire breast, including the top.

Results You Can Get from a Breast Lift

A breast lift will only move the existing breast tissue you have into a higher position. The newly placed breasts will look like they did before the loss of skin and muscle elasticity caused them to sag. If you only want your existing breasts to be better placed, you will benefit from a breast lift.

However, if you also want additional volume added to your breasts or more fullness on the top of your breasts, you should talk to the surgeon about pairing a breast lift with breast augmentation.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation adds to your existing breast volume with implants. You can get this surgery with a breast lift to improve the shape and increase the size of your breasts. However, both breast lift surgery and implants can be performed on their own, depending on the look you want to achieve.

When You Might Want Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation uses implants to enhance the volume of your breast. Often, the reasons that people want a breast augmentation overlap with why they may want a breast lift procedure. Age, pregnancy, and weight loss are common causes of loss of breast volume that may prompt someone to seek implants. Genetics can play a role. Some people naturally have a genetic predisposition to having smaller breasts that they may not feel satisfied with. You can always wait and get a breast augmentation after babies.

Results from Getting Breast Implants

When you get breast implants, you’ll have fuller breasts that appear more youthful. Additionally, implants can fill out the top part of your breasts where breast lift surgery cannot. However, you don’t always need implants to get a more youthful appearance.

Can You Get a Breast Lift Without Implants

Breast lift surgery does not always have to include getting implants. You may opt not to get implants if you only want to enhance the position of your breasts without changing their volume.

When you have a consultation with your surgeon, you’ll tell them that you don’t want implants but only a breast lift. Because all plastic surgery is customized to each patient, the doctor can accommodate your need for a breast lift without implants.

What Happens During a Breast Lift

When you get a breast lift, the doctor accomplishes three main things during the procedure:

  • Reposition the breast
  • Move breast tissue
  • Elevate the areolas and resize them if necessary

First, the doctor will make an incision through which they reposition the breast and tissue into its new, higher location and remove excess skin. To accommodate the newly positioned breasts, the doctor will move the areolas up, too. If you need the areolas resized, the doctor will do that during the breast lift.

After you recover, you’ll have firmer, more youthful-looking breasts.

Why the Surgeon Matters for Breast Lift

Breast lift surgery requires a highly skilled doctor to perform the procedure. The outcome of a breast lift depends heavily on the skill of the doctor to properly move breast material to create an aesthetically pleasing outcome.

When selecting your surgeon, look for one who has years of experience in plastic surgery and breast lifts. Ideally, you’ll want a doctor who has been board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. At Charlotte Plastic Surgery, our senior doctors all have this certification or are eligible for this certification.

The facility’s accreditation is also important. You will be under general anesthesia for the procedure and should be in a facility fully outfitted to support all the surgical needs of its patients. Our surgical center for Charlotte Plastic Surgery has accreditation by the American Association for Accreditation of Surgical Facilities.

Finally, don’t forget to learn who administers anesthesia for the procedure. You want highly qualified anesthesia providers when you have any surgery that requires general anesthesia. At Charlotte Plastic Surgery, we partner with Carolina Anesthesia Associates, who have more than 20 years of experience in the field.

Knowing your provider is an essential part of ensuring that you have a safe and successful breast lift techniques.
