CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting®: Which body contouring device do I need?

Posted on by Dr. Stephan Finical to CoolSculpting, CoolTone

There are a number of body contour services available. Each of these methods is used to deliver a slightly different result. Two of the current methods to compare are CoolTone vs CoolSculpting. While the names are similar, and the treatment process is similar in that a wand-like device is used, the results are different and the reasons for why you might use each is different as well. Due to this, it is important to have a clear understanding as to which body contouring device is right for you.

Comparing CoolTone vs CoolSculpting

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a body contouring process created to help kill off fat cells within your body. During a treatment session, body fat within a target area will be frozen. The freezing of the fat cells will block out the delivery of blood and oxygen. When this happens much of the fat cells will die off. Once the cells die the body will process the unnecessary cells and pass them, just as you would any other unnecessary material.

The process can take several weeks to a few months before final results are realized. The frozen fat cells will not instantly break free of the body. Instead, think of the frozen cell like a piece of fruit on a tree that experienced an early winter freeze. The cold temperature will ultimately kill the fruit, but it won’t fall from the tree instantly. It takes some time for the living material within the fruit to die, which will eventually result in it falling from the branch. The same is true with frozen fat cells. The freezing will block off blood and oxygen for an extended period of time, which results in the death of the cells, but it won’t break free of the rest of the body completely for weeks to a few months.

Depending on the severity of the fat build-up within the area and how well the body takes to the CoolSculpting, it might take several treatments to reach your desired level. Some times fat cells that were frozen the first time will not completely die off. While these cells might have survived the first CoolSculpting, they will be more susceptible to death by freezing during subsequent treatments.

What is CoolTone by CoolSculpting?

CoolTone has a similar name as CoolSculpting but the two target completely different areas of the body and shouldn’t be confused for one another. Why the similar name? CoolTone by CoolSculpting, comes from the same company called Allergan. And in case this name sounds familiar, it is because Allergan also produces Botox.

CoolTone by CoolSculpting uses a similar application process, in which a wand-like device is used to treat the skin. However, unlike CoolSculpting, which is used to target fat cells, CoolTone is designed to target muscle tissue.

CoolTone uses what is known as magnetic muscle stimulation (MMS) by shooting electromagnetic energy into the muscle tissue. This causes the fibers within a muscle to contract, relax, and contract, over and over again (think of it like squeezing a given muscle, but doing so rapidly, almost like a strong twitch). By doing this the muscles will strengthen and become tighter and more toned.

When considering CoolTone vs CoolSculpting, CoolTone is used with muscle tissue while CoolSculpting is used on fat cells. Additionally, the time between treatments is significantly less with CoolTone than it is with CoolSculpting. With CoolSculpting you may not see the final results within your body for several weeks, if not a few months. During this time you need to wait before scheduling a second session. However, as you are not removing cells from your body but instead strengthening the muscle cells you already have, you can schedule several sessions during a week (much like weight training you don’t want to over-train the area, so you’ll want to limit CoolTone usually to no more than twice a week).

Body Contour Devices Work

The right body contouring device for you ultimately depends on what you’re looking to accomplish. With CoolSculpting you will target fat cells. Typically it is used on the stubborn fat cells collected in certain areas of your body that, despite diet and exercise, never seem to go away. CoolTone vs CoolSculpting, on the other hand, is used on muscles you want to tighten up and to look leaner and toned.

CoolTone is not a method used for greatly enlarging your muscles. If you’re looking to increase the size of a given muscle you will need to work out that given muscle. When a muscle is worked out using heavy weights the fibers within the muscle will tear and break. The body will then begin to repair the damaged muscle fibers. With enough protein in the diet, the body will have excess muscle-building material, allowing it to build the muscles up larger. However, with CoolTone you are not directly tearing the muscle fibers. Instead, you’re simply working the fibers out, which in turn will help strengthen the fibers and tone the muscles without putting on bulk or size. If you’re interested in toning without increasing your muscle size, this is the perfect option for you.

The Right Body Contouring For You

Chances are, you already know whether you want to remove fat cells from your body or if you want to strengthen, tighten, and tone your muscles. With this in mind, you’ll have a good idea of what body contouring device will be right for you. However, the best way to determine this is to schedule an in-person consultation. This way, a skincare professional can sit down and work with you in identifying exactly what you want to accomplish and the best way to go about doing this.

There might be times where you’ll need to take advantage of both. This is most commonly required when it comes to abs. The only way strong abs will show through is if you have stripped away body fat from the abdominal area. It doesn’t matter how strong the ab muscles are, if there is fat covering the muscles there’s simply no way for it to shine through. So, if you’re interested in having taught, defined abs and are considering CoolTone as a treatment method, but you have a layer of stubborn fat on top of your abs, you may need to utilize CoolSculpting before moving forward.
