Does CoolSculpting® Work on the Stomach?

Posted on by Dr. Stephan Finical to CoolSculpting

If you are looking for fat loss options, then you may have read about CoolSculpting®. If so, chances are you wondering, “Does CoolSculpting work on the stomach?”. Well, w hen you first learn about CoolSculpting, it may sound too good to be true.

Throughout your life, you probably heard you cannot spot reduce to get rid of fat from one specific area like your belly. It is true in the sense that when you lose body fat through diet and exercise, your body “chooses” which fat cells to release. No amount of crunches can change that. However, cosmetic procedures like CoolSculpting® can target specific areas and basically “spot reduce.”

As you may already know, CoolSculpting® is an FDA-cleared nonsurgical fat loss procedure. While we always promote a healthy diet and exercise for weight management, the truth is many people have specific “problem” areas where the body retains a little extra fat for longer. You can be physically fit and within your healthy weight range and still have pockets of fat you just don’t like the look of.

CoolSculpting® permanently destroys stubborn fat cells and is often a great solution to those trouble spots that may resist diet and exercise.

This varies so much by the person, so it helps to talk to a plastic surgeon or cosmetic healthcare professional who offers CoolSculpting® and other fat loss treatments to explore whether it is right for you.

Learning Whether CoolSculpting® is Right For You

If your “problem area” is your belly, stomach, or abdomen, then you may be happy to learn that CoolSculpting® can be an option to reduce that fat. The FDA cleared CoolSculpting® to treat body fat in nine areas of the body, including the belly.

According to CoolSculpting , some of the other areas include:

  • Under the chin and jawline
  • Love handles, waistline, or flanks
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Upper arm
  • The back
  • The banana roll under the buttocks

Each CoolSculpting session may take 30-70 minutes, depending on which area of the body needs this treatment. Sometimes people treat a couple of areas in one session, which may result in a more extended session. Some patients need one treatment, and some may need a couple of treatments to achieve their desired results.

CoolSculpting® works best for patients who are reasonably close to their goal weight, such as within around 20 pounds. It isn’t intended for significant weight loss, and it is more for hyper-targeted fat loss. If you are unsure whether you are a good candidate for CoolSculpting®, booking a consultation with a skilled provider doesn’t hurt.

In the world of cosmetic procedures, one size doesn’t fit everyone, so we treat each prospective patient as an individual.

CoolSculpting® Before & After Results

How CoolSculpting® works

At this point, you already know that CoolSculpting® is a procedure designed for targeted fat loss. It uses a technique called Cryolipolysis which freezes fat cells and as a result destroys them. It is both non-invasive and FDA-approved.

During “cryolipolysis,” your provider uses a proprietary applicator to apply the cold to specific targeted areas and breaks down those specific fat cells. CoolSculpting® creates ice crystals within the fat cells and which causes them to rupture. You see, fat cells are especially susceptible to cold temperatures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons .

Your skin and other tissues aren’t harmed during the process, but some of those pesky fat cells are.

As you heal, your body naturally releases the destroyed fat cells by reabsorbing them into the body. According to CoolSculpting®, results unfold over the next few weeks following your CoolSculpting® treatment. You may experience a 20-25% reduction of fat in the targeted area.

Some patients who are sensitive about whether other people will notice they “had work done” appreciate that CoolSculpting® results are not instant. Since it works with the body’s natural processes, you may see results progress over a month or more much like the gradual results from other methods of fat loss.

Most people find the CoolSculpting® process fairly pleasant and even read or nap while it is being done. Others feel pulling to tenderness in their abdominal area while receiving treatment for belly fat.

Other Potential Benefits of CoolSculpting®

While CoolSculpting® is primarily for reducing a little stubborn body fat, it also may help rejuvenate and tighten the skin. This is especially interesting as people often find the appearance and texture of their skin get worse when they lose body fat or weight. As we age, collagen and elastin production decrease making it harder and harder for our skin to remain tight looking with quick weight loss.

For many people, a treatment that may address both unwanted body fat and skin texture is especially attractive. While the fat loss from CoolSculpting® doesn’t remove enough fat at once to cause loose skin, some people find their belly area especially susceptible after they lose a lot of weight.

If you are considering CoolSculpting to treat yourself and address stubborn fat after weight loss or body recomposition then this additional perk may be of interest. More research needs to be done to see what role CoolSculpting® plays in tightening the skin.

Initial results and anecdotal information are both promising. Find out how does coolsculpting works on the stomach.

A study published in Dermatologic Surgery indicated that CoolSculpting® may help tighten the skin and improve texture. In fact, the FDA cleared CoolSculpting® to treat skin laxity in the chin area. While the chin area is different from the abdomen or stomach, there is little reason to think any improvement in skin texture would apply to other areas as well. This is one of the developments to follow in non-surgical cosmetic treatment options and skin rejuvenation.
