At Charlotte Plastic Surgery, we hear from many women who are displeased with the size of their breasts… and not always because the breasts are too small. For many women, the issue is breasts that are too large for their frame, which can not only create a feeling of self-consciousness, but also physical symptoms such as back pain.
The problem of oversized breasts can be corrected via a breast reduction. Our providers have ample expertise in several different breast reduction techniques, including what’s known as the Spair breast reduction procedure.
As you consider your options for breast reduction, and as you seek to determine the method that’s best suited for you, we welcome you to schedule a consultation with us. In the meantime, here’s an overview of the Spair technique and what sets it apart.
About the Spair Breast Reduction Procedure
The Spair breast reduction procedure was developed to give women an opportunity to eliminate unwanted volume, and to gain breasts more proportional to the rest of their body, all while minimizing scarring and enhancing postoperative results.
To understand what makes the Spair technique so special, it’s important to understand how breast reduction has typically been handled. Historically, most breast reductions have resulted in long scars running on the underside of the breasts. Additionally, most patients wind up with vertical scars running up the center of their breast and around the nipple.
While these traditional methodologies were effective in reducing breast size, the end results were marred by these unsightly scars. Additionally, the positioning of the incisions often resulted in the breasts losing their shape and definition.
The Spair breast reduction procedure works a little differently. With this approach, the surgeon removes tissue from around the nipple and areola, moving in a semicircular pattern. The breast is then reshaped in a way that maintains its soft, natural curvature and its sense of definition.
The Spair breast reduction procedure results in a single scar that passes around the nipple and areola, then straight down the inframammary fold. Skilled surgeons can position the incisions in such a way that the scar is just slightly visible.
In addition to the minimal scarring, the Spair technique brings a number of other advantages: It helps the patient maintain the shape of her breast, it leads to a much more brief recovery time, and it ensures that the end results of the breast reduction are aesthetically satisfying.
Given these benefits, it’s easy to see why we are so happy to offer our patients breast reduction via the Spair technique, right here at Charlotte Plastic Surgery. To find out more about this and other breast reduction options, we welcome you to contact us for a consultation.
Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?
In addition to telling you more about the Spair breast reduction procedure, we are also happy to give you more information about your own eligibility for breast surgery.
If you have oversized breasts that have contributed to physical or emotional health problems, then you can definitely benefit from learning more about breast reduction. Specifically, the best candidates for a safe and successful breast reduction meet all of the following criteria:
- Physically healthy, without any underlying conditions that would prevent them from proper healing.
- Not smokers or are willing to cease smoking in order to prepare for their surgery.
- Have talked with their plastic surgeon about breast reduction and have realistic expectations about the procedure, the recovery, and the final outcome.
- Feel awkward or self-conscious due to the size of their breasts in relation to the rest of their body.
- Shoulder indentations that have been left by their bra straps.
- Have a difficult time finding clothing or undergarments that fit them properly.
- Back, neck, or shoulder pain stemming from the weight of their breasts.
If you fit the above criteria and want to learn more about the next steps, we welcome you to contact us to learn more about the Spair breast reduction procedure.
Recovery from a Breast Reduction Procedure
No matter which breast reduction procedure you have, it qualifies as major surgery. As such, your body will require some time to rest and to heal.
Generally speaking, patients who have a breast reduction will need to take at least a week off from work or from school, and in some cases will require closer to two weeks. Because the Spair method uses fewer incisions, the recovery will often be expedited. Even so, it’s probably best to plan for about a week of lying low and resting up.
While some tenderness and discomfort can be anticipated, your surgeon can use long-lasting medications to get you through the worst of it. For many of our patients, over-the-counter pain remedies are more than sufficient, especially past the 72-hour mark.
Your surgeon will supply instructions for bandage removal and follow-up appointments, and also let you know how long you need to wear the support bra that’s provided to you.
Making the Right Decision About Breast Reduction
The decision to have your breast volume reduced is not one to make lightly. It’s important to seek medical guidance as you consider your health and wellness goals, and as you determine the specific procedure that will help you achieve them.
That’s why we always advise our patients to start their process with a consultation. We’d love to sit down with you, discuss your needs and expectations, answer any questions you may have, and guide you to the right procedure… whether that’s the Spair methodology or something else.
