Which Type of Breast Surgery is Right for You and Your Goals?

Posted on by CPS to Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction

While some women are perfectly content with the size, shape, and appearance of their breasts, others wish they could make some changes. Those desired changes might include altering the shape of the breasts, adding volume, reducing volume, or even repositioning the nipple. No matter the specifics of your breast enhancement needs, there is a surgical procedure that can help you achieve the desired results.

It’s important to remember, however, that not all breast enhancements are created equal. There are a number of types of breast surgery, and it’s important to work with your plastic surgeon to carefully select the procedure that’s most closely aligned with your needs and goals. Also note that some women may need a single breast surgery, while others may wish to combine a couple of different procedures (for instance, having a breast augmentation and a breast lift done at the same time).

The Different Types of Breast Surgery Procedures

Breast Enhancement Surgery

How can you determine which of these different types of breast enhancement surgery types is right for you? The best option is to make an appointment for a consultation with one of our surgeons, which will allow you to speak one-on-one with an expert, ask any questions you may have, and ensure you’re picking the appropriate procedure.

In the meantime, here are just a few basic guidelines for selecting your breast enhancement surgery.

Breast Reduction Surgery

As you think about the different types of breast surgery, there are a few primary categories you’ll want to consider.

The first category that we’ll mention is breast reduction surgery. This is for women who wish to have volume removed from their breasts. This is a procedure we recommend for women who deal with any of the following issues:

  • Neck or back pain due to the size or heaviness of your breasts
  • Difficulty finding clothing that fits you
  • Simple dissatisfaction with the size or heaviness of your breasts
  • Under-breast rashes or similar issues

If you struggle with any of those issues, breast reduction surgery is almost certainly the correct course of action.

Another type of breast surgery technique used in a breast reduction procedure is a breast lift. This has less to do with the volume/size of your breasts and everything to do with their shape. Once the reduction is taken, the breast lift technique is employed by the surgeon to reposition the nipple and minimize the “saggy” appearance of the breasts. This is often something our patients have done as part of a mommy makeover. Also, note that a breast lift can be done in tandem with breast augmentation.

What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Speaking of breast augmentation, that’s the next category of breast enhancement surgery types to be aware of; basically, when we talk about breast augmentation, we’re talking about adding volume to the breasts, making them a bit bigger.

Breast Augmentation via Implants

Breast Augmentation via Implants

The most common approach to breast augmentation is the use of implants. By some estimates, this is the most popular form of cosmetic surgery in the country, with hundreds of thousands of women getting implants each year.

This is a good approach for women who are looking to increase the size of their breasts by any amount. Silicone and saline implants are both available, offering slightly varying shapes and textures. Your surgeon can talk with you more about particular options.

Asymmetrical Breast Surgery

It’s also worth noting that some women seek breast surgery not because they are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts per se, but because their breasts are asymmetrical in some way and they wish to achieve greater uniformity.

This can be done in a variety of ways; if the asymmetry is purely a matter of nipple positioning, a breast lift may be all that’s required. If there is a difference in breast volume, either an augmentation or a reduction may be necessary. And in some instances, the patient might need a combination of procedures to help her meet her desired goals.

Choosing the Right Type of Breast Surgery for You and Your Goals

As you think about the breast enhancement surgery types that best fits your needs and goals, we’d highly recommend meeting with a surgeon for a few reasons.

First and foremost, your surgeon can qualify you, evaluating your physical wellbeing and ensuring that you are a good candidate for a safe and effective procedure. Patient safety is always our top concern.

Second, your surgeon will be able to listen to your goals and help you identify the breast surgery, or combination of breast surgeries, that will help you meet those goals.

Also note that, here at Charlotte Plastic Surgery, we can use imaging technology to show you a 3D representation of what your new breasts will look like. This helps us to properly set expectations, and it ensures that doctor and patient are on the same page with regard to the desired outcome.

Finally, your surgeon will be able to talk with you in detail about the recovery process, and steps you can take to get back to your normal lifestyle as quickly and as safely as possible.
