For example, a man’s jaw continues to grow until he is 21 or 22, and it’s unwise to change the size of the nose while the rest of the face is still undergoing changes. With any surgery, risks such as infection and blood clots exist. Our surgeons will always talk with you about potential risks specific to your procedures in your consultation. Other risks may include incomplete improvement requiring additional surgery.
Back to work: Most patients spend the first 24 hours with their heads elevated on a pillow. Swelling and bruising around the eyes are common for the first few days but can be reduced with cold compresses. Within one week, all dressings, splint,s and sutures are removed.
Regardless of your aesthetic goals, most patients will need what’s called an open rhinoplasty. This is done through a small incision made between the nostrils, which allows the surgeon to lift the skin to access the sub-structures and adjust the cartilage and tissues surrounding the nose. These procedures are always done on an outpatient basis.
Some patients are anxious about the recovery time. As with any surgical procedure, a rhinoplasty will require a little time for your body to fully heal. Typically, this recovery time is relatively brief. Most patients will have some packing—soft Vaseline gauze—in their nose for the first night, but it’s removed the next day. Stitches and splints are typically removed after the first week or so.
Following the removal of the splint and stitches, patients are able to get back to normal socialization. At first, a little bit of make-up may be needed to cover up any residual bruising. Half the swelling goes away after two or three months, and the remainder of the swelling subsides within the first year. Your plastic surgeon will stay in touch with you via regular appointments throughout that first year simply to ensure that you are recovering as intended.
